Do you need a Lower Back Brace?
A lower back brace, also called an orthopedic
back brace, is not for everyone.
As a matter of fact, I have been told that long-term bracing is often
discouraged, especially
if the use is continual.
Instead, a doctor is likely to
recommend lumbar
support that comes from back
muscles strengthened by back
stretching and back
strengthening exercises. However...
...there ae are times when a back brace
is
appropriate.
Since braces for the lower back
are built to support
abdominal
muscles
by restricting motion, they can take pressure off the
lower back, relieving back
pain and in many cases improving posture.
If you are selecting a lower back brace you have
options...
- a rigid back brace
- a corset back
brace
- an air
back brace
- a magnetic back brace
...all
of which you may have heard referred
to as
a back posture brace.
Which is the best back brace?
Although rigid and corset style braces are the
most often used it is best to talk
with a health care provider, or a back pain
specialist, to determine what type of back brace will be best for YOUR
back problem.
Rigid Back Brace
A rigid back brace or a semi-rigid back brace, which is often
custom fitted and molded, may
be used after back surgery, or for a back injury that results
in broken bones or
a fracture. These braces may also be used as scoliosis back
braces.
Because of the weight of the molded form, a rigid
back brace can be cumbersome to wear. However, it can be
very effective in limiting motion, thus promoting healing.
Corset Back Brace
A corset style orthopedic back brace is a flexible elastic band which
fits snugly over the
area directly above and around the hips. Although not as motion
restricting as a rigid back
brace, or semi-rigid brace, a corset brace can provide needed
stability.
This type of brace is extremely popular with
people who do heavy lifting or feel the need for added lumbar support
during the course of day-to-day activities.
