Preventing Hip Pain with Exercise
Problems related to the hips are one of the common
causes of lower back pain and leg pain. Therefore, preventing
hip pain
can be an important factor in maintaining overall back health.
At least
in my case it has been.
Although there are instances when the
cause of hip pain is a non-preventable medical condition...
...there are many times when
occasional or chronic hip pain, or pelvic pain...
...can be attributed
to factors over which
we do have
control. For instance...
...can all contribute to pain in hip joints, and
pelvis discomfort.
And for these hip pain causes, simple hip
strengthening exercise,
and hip stretching exercise, may
significantly help prevent
hip joint pain and treat
hip joint pain.
Effective Hip Exercises
Only a qualified health care provider - someone
who has fully
diagnosed your
hip pain
symptoms - can determine what type of exercise will be
most
beneficial for you.
In my case, the best hip exercises
are a
combination of...
...all of which have helped alleviate the
discomfort
brought on by arthritis, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, AND sitting for
extended periods of time (one of the biggest culprits of hip pain with
age).
My advice, regardless of what types of exercise
you do...
...and I am sure your doctor or physical
therapist would agree,
begin exercise for preventing hip pain SLOWLY, as doing otherwise may
increase pain and cause hip injury.
I have also learned how big of a role the stomach
muscles
play in supporting the hips, pelvis and spine, and therefore
include easy stomach
exercise
in my daily routine.
Other
Ways to Prevent Hip Pain
In addition to, or instead of exercises for hip pain, a doctor or
physical therapist may recommend other forms of treatment.
Ice
therapy
and/or heat
therapy
may be
suggested, as well as...
- over-the-counter or prescription pain medication
- temporary use of a cane or walker
- weight loss to reduce stress on the hips and
pelvis
- temporary use of a lower
back brace
or
sacroiliac joint belt
However, as with preventing hip pain with
exercise, these treatment options should only be done if medically
prescribed.
